History

What started out as an informal savings program amongst friends at SHOEMART Inc. head office saw the birth of one of the most successfully managed Savings and Loans Association, the SM Savings and Loan Association.

It was in April 1987 when employees of SM, headed by Mr. Ricky A. Lim, saw the need to assist SM employees with their financial needs, and at the same time teach them to be thrifty and prudent. By way of setting up a Savings and Loan Association, members can save and access funds whenever the need arises.

Mr. Henry Sy Sr., seeing the benefits the SM SLA will bring to its members, willingly donated the initial seed money of P100,000 to the Association.

Objectives

To promote the virtue of savings amongst employees and to provide financial assistance at a very low cost, the SM Savings and Loan Association aims to:

  • Encourage members to save part of their salary for use.ce (34)

  • Grant its members an opportunity to increase their purchasing power through loans, the amount of which may be difficult to borrow from banks.

  • Assist its members in avoiding sourcing of funds from usurers to solve their emergency financial problems.

  • Provide additional income to members through declaration of dividends.
